Trust: Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust

Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust took a proactive and engaging approach to educate staff on the correct treatment of hypoglycaemia, creating an interactive and supportive environment for learning.

  • Communication channels: The campaign was communicated through a variety of channels, including emails, internal newsletters, and social media platforms, to reach as many staff as possible.
  • Education: The Trust’s education hubs on both the Frimley and Wexham sites became the focal points for the week’s activities. On the Frimley site, the post-graduate area was transformed into an interactive learning space, while at Wexham, a stand was set up in the high-traffic corridor to capture the attention of staff as they moved between departments. Both locations featured games, educational displays, and prizes.
  • Fun games: One of the most popular activities was the “Sticky Dots” game, where participants were given a hypo-related scenario and tasked with selecting the correct treatment to save the patient. This game allowed staff to engage in critical discussions about hypo treatments and the appropriate steps to take during a hypo event.
  • Hypo Boxes: Staff were encouraged to familiarise themselves with the contents of these boxes, which are crucial in treating hypoglycaemia. The team also used this opportunity to introduce the use of Glucagon, explaining when and how it should be administered, and how often it can be used.
  • Night staff: Recognising the challenges faced by night staff, the team took their Hypo Trolley on night shifts, ensuring that these critical team members could still access the educational content and participate in the fun games.
  • Hypo Champion Award: To further motivate staff and acknowledge their commitment to excellent hypo management, the Trust introduced the “Hypo Champion Award”. Staff were invited to vote for colleagues who they felt had demonstrated exceptional skills in treating hypoglycaemia or advocating for best practices. The winners were presented with the Hypo Champion Award and received a small gift as a token of appreciation for their hard work and dedication.

The campaign successfully increased staff knowledge of hypo treatment protocols, built confidence in managing hypoglycaemia, and fostered a sense of teamwork and camaraderie.
