Trust: Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
The Elsie Bertram Diabetes Centre at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital took a dynamic approach to Hypo Awareness Week 2024, leveraging digital tools, in-person engagement, and creative campaigns to educate staff and raise awareness of hypoglycaemia management across the hospital.
- Communication channels: The campaign was launched through The Beat, the hospital’s intranet platform, supplemented by articles on the Trust’s staff and public Facebook pages to reach a broader audience.
- Resources: Staff were provided with digital and paper hypo awareness packs which were distributed digitally to ward and outpatient staff, link nurses, and clinical educators, while hospital volunteers, the “Bleep Buddies,” ensured the paper versions reached wards directly. Staff used the resources to create displays and educational boards on their wards using the resources.
- Prize draw: To incentivise staff, completion of the CDEP module entered participants into a prize draw for a £25 Amazon voucher.
- Educational activities: Two bespoke bite-sized presentations were created for different staff groups, one for outpatient teams and the other for inpatient staff and diabetes link nurses. These live sessions, hosted on Microsoft Teams, were held at 30-minute intervals in the morning, ensuring accessibility for busy schedules.
- Community engagement: One of the diabetes team members wore a Hypo Awareness Week T-shirt during their 50th parkrun, engaging with hospital staff attending the event and featuring in the park run’s Facebook run report. For a fun touch, the team shared jelly babies as hypo treatment, adding an energetic boost for participants.
Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital’s campaign not only enhanced staff understanding of hypoglycaemia management but also fostered engagement through diverse mediums, from digital education to on-the-ground activities.
